Importance of having the right water filter at home

Importance of having the right water filter at home

Boosting your water intake may be a goal for many of us, but if your water doesn’t taste good, your goal may be unreachable. Adding a filtration unit to your kitchen counter may be the simplest way to make sure that your body is getting the water it needs.

Make Space for a Berkey

You can easily find room for any one of the Big Berkey Water Filters currently on the market. No matter how many people you have in your house, your Berkey filter can be used for:

  • drinking immediately!
  • filling water bottles for later
  • making coffee and tea, and
  • cooking

While it’s easy to drink more during the warm seasons, cool weather also dictates that we make sure we get enough water on a daily basis.

Risks of Daily Dehydration

As a general rule, if we’re thirsty, we’ll drink something. However, if you continuously take in less water than you need to stay healthy, the challenges can be dangerous over time and can cut into your quality of life.

Long-term dehydration risks include:

  • Kidney problems and constipation: The organs and systems that detoxify your body need water to keep your internal filters clear. From your liver to your kidneys to your gut, if you’re not getting enough water, your body has to work a lot harder to keep you healthy.
  • Low blood pressure: If you struggle to exercise in the winter, you may feel cold all the time and even get light-headed when you stand up. Boosting your water intake will reduce the risk of low blood pressure and increase your energy so you can get out and enjoy the limited sunlight.
  • Mental fog: Many who are constantly dehydrated also struggle with mental fog. This can manifest in many ways; you may have a harder time solving problems or constantly feel edgy and irritable. By making it easy to drink healthy, pure and freshly filtered water, you can keep your brain both flexible and friendly.

Higher Risk Living Through Chemistry

Living in the modern world makes a lot of things in our lives easier, but it also makes our lives more dangerous. A common chemical found in tap water in much of the developed world, PFAS, has been in use since the 1940s, and it’s now in our water and our bodies.

PFAS, or poly and perfluoroalkyl substances, encompass more than 4,000 chemicals. These chemicals are used to make products that need moisture proof and stain resistant. You’ll find it in the packaging of your french fries and the tools in your kitchen.

There’s a tolerated amount of this chemical that can be allowed in our drinking water as defined by government regulating agencies. However, if you’re ready to avoid exposure to this large family of chemicals made by bonding of carbon and fluorine (and thus known as a “forever” chemical,) then making space for a Berkey on your counter is a good plan.

Volume Needs

Your Berkey size will depend on the number of people in your household. You should determine your needs based on highest use periods; for example, if your house is the gathering space for many neighborhood kids, you may want a Royal, for up to six, or a Crown, for up to twelve.

Berkeys are gravity-fed, so once you fill the top reservoir, it will take time to be available for drinking and cooking. Health experts recommend 64 ounces, or 1/2 gallon, per person per day. If you’re a 2 person household, the 1.5 gallon travel Berkey may be all you need.

There are 6 Berkey options in all:

  • Travel Berkey: 1-3 people, 1.5 gallons
  • Big Berkey: 1-4 people, 2.25 gallons
  • Berkey Light: 2-5 people, 2.75 gallons
  • Royal Berkey: 2-6 people, 3.25 gallons
  • Imperial Berkey: 4-8+ people, 4.5 gallons
  • Crown Berkey: 6-12+ people, 6 gallons

All are stainless except for the Light, which is a non-reactive plastic product. You can also invest in stands for your Berkey, which will hold it off the counter so you can slip a cup under the spout if you are concerned that the Berkey shouldn’t be too close to the edge of your countertop.

Water does weight just over 8 pounds per gallon. If you have small children in the house who are curious and may reach for the Berkey, get a stand and move the canister back from the edge.

Lifetime Results

Each Berkey unit comes with 2 black filters that will filter 6000 gallons of water. If you have non-reactive water bottles in your household, you could get in the habit of filling the reservoir in the morning, cooking and drinking from the Berkey during the day, and filling up your non-reactive water bottles before bed so you can load them in the refrigerator for cool water in the morning.

Berkey sells a non-reactive lightweight and very durable water bottle, or you can invest in stainless steel water bottles to keep in the refrigerator. You needn’t worry that you’ll run short; the Berkey filtration system cleans about 1 gallon of water per hour.

No matter your health goals, more water will almost always help support your well-being, and clean water is critical to good health and physical fitness. Invest in a Berkey for a healthy heart, tummy and brain.
