Minimalism is chosen by residents of big cities, perfectionists, people with an active lifestyle and, at the same time, esthetes. This interior design style was created following the heyday of modernism and is based on Japanese culture. In the Western variant, minimalism is less radical, more practical and functional. How to follow the style

The minimalist style in the interior stands out for:

A maximum of 3 interior primary colors, most often neutral base colors, but light accents are acceptable;

In large open spaces, minimalism can reveal its full potential and, in a small kitchen, this style is better than the others, does not visually enhance it.

What can spoil the minimalist aesthetic? This style does not accept the usual classic elegance, a sense of habitability of country or Provence styles, characteristic of ethnicity and fusion color. In addition, the abundance of textiles, the decor and the complexity of the decoration are not appropriate. Also, keep in mind that in such a kitchen, you will need to clean up much more often.

Finishing & Materials

The minimalism in decoration and furniture calls for a combination of modern materials (plastic, metal, glass) and natural materials – wood, stone, ceramic. Ideally, the entire finish should be simple, but of impeccable quality and, of course, without decorations.

Ceiling

The ceiling should be light, better matte, but the gloss is appropriate. It can be covered with plaster or paint, the stretch ceiling is optimal, and if the height allows, it is better to separate the living room with a plasterboard ceiling on two levels.

The ceiling should be white. Lighter shades of gray are also acceptable, in rare cases, beige or sand.

The use of fabric ceilings, ceiling paints and photographic ceilings is unacceptable. Very rarely are used ceiling panels and mirrored ceilings.

Floor

The design of the room in this style implies a strict and perfectly flat floor. The most suitable coatings are stone, large ceramic tiles without pattern, porcelain stoneware.

But you can also lay traditional laminate and parquet planks in light beige, gray or dark tones.

Tips

Yes, minimalism is a “cold” style, but let it be cold only outside – loose floors, tiles, porcelain and stone are better to heat.
By color, the floor can be associated with the ceiling or the walls (accent wall) and it may be necessary to contrast it with a bright environment and emphasize its cleanliness.

The walls

The walls, including the backsplash, must be plain, perfectly flat and concise. Wall panels, paint, large ceramic tiles without pattern are suitable. The wallpaper can highlight the accent wall in the work area or the dining room.

The colors of the walls are neutral tones, most often with a cool shade.

The backsplash can be decorated with transparent or colored glass, stone, tiles or in the color of walls or worktops, in a color contrasting with the kitchen set.

Stylization in minimalism allows the use of a combination of “flat texture walls”. In this case, the walls become the decoration of the room: decorative plaster, imitation of wooden surfaces, panels with a discreet pattern (strips generally longitudinal or transverse).

Decor

The walls of the kitchen in the style of minimalism do not need decorative details, it is allowed to use a wall clock and 1 to 3 conceptual paintings, but they should not be graphic.

Minimalist kitchens can be revitalized with a minimum of decorative objects: an unusual vase, an original light or wall lamp, a stylish support for fruit, etc.

The decor should not be too much: a vase or two or three large bottles is enough.

All furniture must be decorated in the same style; eclecticism is not appropriate here;
The dining table can be replaced by a bar, if the kitchen area is small and a counter or island delimits the space;

The use of kitchen niches as cupboards is relevant, as this style seeks to use space appropriately and reduce the amount of furniture;
Lunch set: glass, veneer, wood counter, wooden or metal legs. A table can be massive and heavy, or on the contrary light;
Dining chairs can recall the shape and materials of office chairs, but the color is acceptable, not just white, black, and gray.
Multifunctional furniture should be used (a table with drawers, a folding cutting table, a table that can be hidden in a cupboard, etc.) and equipment (a food processor, a slow cooker with the functions of a bread machine, yogurt maker, double boiler, etc.).

The lighting

As already noted, a minimalist design is not only space, but also light. Rooms with large windows and the use of several light sources.

The following combinations are possible:

Central lighting (one large luminaire or several small ones) above the table and lighting of the work area;
Light panels on the ceiling and additional lighting for the catering group and the work area;
Projectors and central lighting;
Concealed kitchen lighting and central lighting.

Metal, plastic and even wooden lamps are suitable. By limiting yourself to decoration and textiles, do not limit yourself to choosing a lamp. Its design can be unusual, similar to origami, a spaceship or atoms.
