Toilet room dimensions + toilet standard size: a comprehensive guide & useful tips

Designing a house is quite interesting until it comes to measurements; the slightest mistake will cost you a successful result. Therefore, precision is one of the core aspects you should consider in this respect. Today, we will tackle the dimensions of a toilet room. Deciding upon a separate room in this regard is smart and practical. Let’s not ruin the whole idea by getting the numbers wrong! This is why we came up with a layout guide, in the limits of which we will answer some of the questions related to this subject, adding other relevant information and accompanying it with useful tips.

What are the standard toilet room dimensions?

It is not mandatory to stick to particular dimensions. Homeowners adapt this room to the available space and their preferences. Nevertheless, the idea of setting a separate toilet room comes from the interest of saving space. Therefore, there are a few figures considered to be standard in this regard.

Let’s see what the experts have to say about that! According to the building code requirements, you should ensure a distance of at least 15 inches (38cm)  between the toilet and the wall from both sides. At the same time, the earlier mentioned requirements state that you should ensure a space of 21 inches (53cm) in front of the toilet.

When it comes to every space in part, one of the first suggestions would be to make sure that the room is at least 30 inches (76cm) wide. Additionally, you may want to leave a clear space of 24 inches (60cm) in front of the toilet for easier use. All in all, you should achieve a result of 30 inches (76cm) by 60 inches (153cm).

At the same time, if we speak about a toilet room in the master bathroom, you should consider a larger space. In this sense, opt for a size of 36 inches (90cm) by 66 inches (168cm). The earlier mentioned 24 inches (60cm) in front of the toilet apply here as well.

Of course, you can go further and opt for larger sizes if the space allows. Consider 48 inches (120cm) by 72 inches (182cm). One should note that this is not a maximum but rather a standard.

What is the standard toilet size?

As you have probably noticed, we have not mentioned the toilet size yet, which means that the previous dimensions are to be considered without a toilet. Since there are various toilet sizes, this element of the toilet room has to be adapted to the available space.

Consider the fact that the standard size of a toilet is 50 inches (130cm) by 25 inches(70cm), and you will not fail to set a room that can be used properly.

If you are limited when it comes to available space, you should pay attention to other sizes regarding the toilet as well to make sure that it will fit into the room. Consider the following aspects:

  • Back and seat heights. They have to be measured from the floor to the top of each element;
  • Depth. It has to be measured from the front of the toilet rim to the toilet back;
  • Rough-in. Consider the space from the closet bolts to the wall.

Toilet room with a sink

Most toilet rooms do not have enough space for a sink, although you should not hesitate to install one if the space allows it. However, it will add additional measurements. You should consider the sink dimensions and the space between the sink and the toilet. As regards the latter, it depends on the room layout.

If the sink is to be placed in the front of the toilet, there should be a distance of at least 30 inches (76cm) from the front edge of the sink and the front edge of the toilet. At the same time, if you consider placing the sink on the same wall as the toilet, ensure a free space of at least 18 inches (45cm) between the sink edge and center of the toilet.

Conclusions

There are no fixed dimensions you should stick to when planning a toilet room, but rather standards you can consider, depending on the available space and comfort. Do not forget about the building code requirements and the main measurements you should take in particular cases. Think in advance about all details since they are the ones to ensure the precision of your measurements.
